HOME FOR HOMEWORK

An after-school tutorial utilizing college students to work with school personnel, parents and university resources to remediate students in grades 1 to 5 in core academic subjects.

Home for Homework is the cornerstone of Operation REACH programs and the lead agency in providing quality after-school programming for elementary school students in the Greater New Orleans schools.

In this program, college students work directly with school personnel, parents, and universities, to remediate students in grades 1-5 in core academic subjects. Because the program values the positive responses youth exhibit when learning in relaxed, aesthetically conducive settings, Home for Homework is appropriately named because it provides a safe, cozy, familial setting conducive for productive student studies.

The Home for Homework After-school Tutorial was established in the St. Bernard Housing Development of New Orleans, a low-income federally-funded housing project populated by minority residents. Being a former resident of the St. Bernard housing project, Kyshun Webster returned as a college student, along with his peers from Xavier and Tulane Universities, to launch the initial program providing quality educational programs for students in the low-income community.

The success of Home for Homework in its initial three-year startup period gained national attention for Mr. Webster and the St. Bernard students. It was cited in USA Today (February 25 1999) as a model program, received The Caring and Sharing Award (August 2000) from golfing legend Tiger Woods and was a finalist in the Louisiana Child Caring Foundation's Angel Award (November 2001), sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. Home for Homework is the springboard from which Operation REACH Inc. was formed in 1999.

PARENTAL EDUCATION REVIEW BOARD (PERB)

There is increasing national and state pressure for individual schools and school districts to involve parents, regardless of their socio-economic background, in a meaningful partnership to improve student academic performance. The mission of PERB is to work with parents, local school districts, and state agencies to create an environment within schools that both welcomes and fosters parental participation. PERB is a completely volunteer effort to train parents, teachers and administrators in effective parental involvement strategies and techniques. The goal is to build family-friendly school environments. PERB provides trained parent teams to evaluate a school site's parental involvement efforts, initiate improvements, and monitor implementation.

2005 Update: PERB holds regular parent-educator trainings. The State of Louisiana is working to establish the full PERB model in two school districts, one urban and one rural.
